I know what you’re thinking, I’ve taken the opportunity to write a blog about setting goals to point out the fact that I look like Shayne Ward. Well as much as we’re both sexy skin heads, I’m a better singer, his fitness advice is shocking as well.
As you all know by now I very much take inspiration from my own personal experiences when writing these, whether anyone decides to read my mad rambling or not, having a format to reflect on my current thoughts helps to keep my mindset where it needs to be. I’ve spoken in some length about motivation in the past and this very much ties in with this. The blogs act as a format for reflection, and as I approach Hulls strongest man next week my mind seems like it is just set on one goal. Wherever you are in you journey, you will at this point realise that the there are many paths to the same destination, the path you choose to take should be the one best suited to you. Let me be a little clearer. As our services revolve mainly around reducing fat and getting leaner, that will be many of your goals, but ultimately becoming healthier is what is important, losing weight is just a happy side effect. Some will choose to purely diet, some just want to come running and do the classes, some want me to get on their case for 6 weeks and have them do excessive amounts of both like an absolute sadist. Whatever the path to your destination might be the goal remains the same. There should be no set time scale for getting healthier either, we often find it’s a holiday that we want to get in shape for, well wouldn’t it be better to try and be healthier in general, then perhaps any holiday that rolls around, we won’t be in a mad rush to get beach body ready. Having the long-term goal of being healthier will lead to a much happier life, don’t tell me that until a holiday is booked your happy to sit on your fat arse filling your face, being tired all the time?
I’m almost losing myself with this, so let me try and get back on the path I want to be on. Healthy eating and exercise are not a part time job, it should be your life! How people can just pick it up and put it down is beyond me! “I need a week off exercise” or “I’m going on holiday so I can’t diet” are both ridiculous statements in themselves! Do you want to be healthier or not? If the answer is no please send in your cancellation now, I’ve no time for people that don’t value their own life because “it’s too much hard work”. Become obsessed with your health, be all in or be a lazy fat bastard, but at least admit it. If you want to dip in and out then you aren’t committed. How much do you all hate me right now?
My reason for discussing this is down to my own linear progress I have had over the past year. Next week I will be giving it my all to top the podium, winning is never assured, but what can be assured is that I gave it my absolute everything on the build up to it. I want to show up on the day and truly believe I did everything I could to do as well as I can. If I’m beaten then it truly was by the better man, but my journey isn’t over! I have a goal to do well in this sport so I will find another competition and go again to win, and again, and again. Eventually, hopefully, I will win, and the satisfaction will be incredible, but what will be more incredible is how much I’ve worked on myself over the full period of training without even considering my overall health. Finding the right path was like getting in a rocket propelled car and accelerating towards that goal like a bullet out of a gun. My journey will not be over however if I do win. When I won in bodybuilding that was it for me, I was satisfied enough to go and find a new path, I just didn’t know it. Instead I wandered around aimlessly knowing where I wanted to go but ultimately not knowing the way, it was years until I found a new path. Knowing what I know now will ensure I never lose my way again, and I’m writing this blog to ensure you all never lose your way either.
I have been in the gym for almost 20 years, I have it in me to be that lazy fat fuck who doesn’t move and fills his face, I’ve been him many times, but I hate that side of me. Joe Rogan calls it his “inner bitch”, personally I call it fat Aaron and fat Aaron can eat for England when he’s let lose, but keeping my eyes on the prize helps to keep Fat Aaron in his cage. Whatever you want to call that voice in your head telling you to sack off exercise and eat all those doughnuts, don’t be a slave to it.
So, ask yourself what is your current path? Have you recently taken up running with the Hull Herz’ and want to improve your 5km time or perhaps run a set distance? Do you have a pair of jeans you want to fit in to? I’ll even accept that you have a holiday booked that you want to look good for! Eventually however you’ll run that time, or fit in those jeans and the holiday will come and go, so what then? It’s easy for motivation to collapse completely and you to just fall back into old ways, and your back at square one before you know it. You need to find yourself a new path. Set your sights on the next adventure and make sure you keep moving towards the ultimate goal of being a healthier human. Let me know in the comments what that is! You never know you might inspire someone to take that up as their next path.
Aaron
P.S. Please don’t just start calling me Fat Aaron, it was bad enough when I used to get Aaron Slow, a little bit of a belly helps me with lifting heavy things, I promise.
Thanks Aaron. Certainly food for thought. Goid luck with Hulls strongest man competition.

Thank Aaron, great read! I can really relate to parts of this, as I feel like I have lost direction over the last few months, not really moving forward. I have just set my new goal, which is to complete 12 weeks of define. I’m not a confident gym goer but am prepared to push out of my comfort zone to learn more about fitness and exercise. Love a new challenge!
Brilliantly Written!
I have my goal and above all am surrounded by people to be able to acheive it. Thanks for everything, you guys are fab!
